Why a Short Walk Can Be the Best Walk: The Power of the Sniff

We've all been there — you're trying to get around the block in 20 minutes, and your dog has spent three of them with their nose buried in a patch of grass. It can feel like you're not getting anywhere. But here's the thing: your dog absolutely is.

At Woof and Walk, one of the things we're most passionate about is helping dogs get the most out of every outing — and that starts with understanding just how powerful their nose really is.

Your Dog's Superpower: Their Nose

A dog's sense of smell is estimated to be anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than ours. While we experience the world primarily through our eyes, dogs experience it through scent. Every lamppost, tuft of grass, and patch of pavement tells a story — who's been there, when, what they ate, how they felt. It's essentially their version of checking social media.

When your dog sniffs, they're not wasting time. They're reading the world.

Why Sniffing Is So Mentally Tiring (In the Best Way)

Mental stimulation is just as exhausting as physical exercise — sometimes more so. A dog who has spent 20 minutes on a slow, sniff-led walk will often be calmer and more settled at home than one who ran around a field for an hour. That's because using their brain takes energy, and sniffing is serious cognitive work.

This is especially important for dogs who might not be able to do high-intensity exercise due to age, injury, or breed. A leisurely 15-minute sniff walk can genuinely tire them out in the healthiest way possible.

The Case for Slowing Down

We know life is busy, and not every walk can be a long one. But a short walk doesn't have to be a lesser walk. When you give your dog the freedom to lead with their nose — pausing, backtracking, lingering — you're giving them an experience that's rich and fulfilling, even if you've only gone around the corner.

At Woof and Walk, our walkers are trained to let dogs set the pace and follow their curiosity. We believe a happy walk isn't measured in miles — it's measured in sniffs.

Bringing the Magic Home: Enrichment Toys and Games

Can't always get out for a walk? No problem. There are some brilliant ways to give your dog that same mental workout at home. Here are a few of our favourites that you can find on Amazon: ( NOTE: you can buy a lot of these from Kmart too but the brands we have shown are tried and tested by us and we find them more durable!)

Snuffle Mats

These textured mats let you hide kibble or treats amongst the fibres, encouraging your dog to use their nose to find them. Even a few minutes on a snuffle mat can have a surprisingly calming effect. Make it stand out. We love this Sunflower one we found ( click on the image to buy!) .

LickiMats

Spread a little peanut butter, yoghurt, or wet food on one of these and watch your dog go to work. Licking is naturally soothing and helps reduce anxiety, making these great for dogs who get stressed or bored. Click on Image to buy!

Puzzle Feeders

Instead of just popping food in a bowl, puzzle feeders make your dog work for their meal. They come in various difficulty levels, so you can match the challenge to your dog's ability.

All kinds of dogs (and cats) like this LUKITO dog treat toy because they have a sense of smell and the ability to find food with their claws. Combining circular track sliding games with linear track sliding games, smart dogs and cats must move the slider correctly to receive food rewards hidden in the maze, improve their intelligence, train their pets' sense of smell, reduce boredom, and effectively alleviate anxiety.

Kong Toys

A classic for good reason. Stuff them with a mix of kibble, banana, or peanut butter and freeze overnight for a long-lasting challenge that keeps dogs busy and mentally engaged. They come in all sizes and extra tough ones too for those dogs with strong bites.

Treat Dispensing Balls

These encourage dogs to nudge, roll, and bat a ball around to release treats hidden inside. Great for solo play and perfect for dogs with loads of energy to burn. This one is also from Kong - we find these the most durable . They do come in different sizes - We have shown the small one here . They can also be used for weight management as a bowl replacement for slow feeding!

A Little Note from Us at Woof and Walk

If you're looking for someone to give your dog the kind of attentive, enriching walk they deserve — one where sniffing is not just allowed but encouraged — we'd love to help. We're a small, passionate team dedicated to making every outing count for your dog, however long or short it may be.

You can find out more about us at woofandwalk.org — we'd love to welcome you and your pup to the Woof and Walk family.

Because every sniff tells a story. Let's give them the time to read their Pee-mails!
